Databases, storage techniques, and more

I’ve started reading The Database Column. I toyed with databases over the years and took a number of database courses at university. But, for the most part, I’ve not done much other than use databases. The blog at The Database Column is fascinating. It discusses column-based databases and shows examples of advantages and what that means. But the most interesting thing is this post on disk trends and performance. I was an eye opener. I’ll be reading this blog some more. It’s fascinating.

Books Entrepreneurs Should Read

Over at Seedcamp there’s an article on 30 books every young entrepreneur should read. As with any list you can take it or leave it. But it is a very good list. I’m also assuming they’re not in any particular order. Although I don’t agree that those are the top 30 I’ve never really thought about a top 30 list. I do know certain books I’d put up on any list. Since I’ve been asked before which books I’ve read with an entrepreneurial slant I’ll list them now. They’re not in any particular order. 1.Rules for Revolutionaries. In a way this appears to be a description of what Apple does. And you can’t really go too wrong trying to emulate Apple’s fanatical desire to please the customer. 5.Startup: A Silicon Valley Adventure Story. Read it and weep. Find out how having the best doesn’t always matter. And why “good enough” usually is plenty good for most people. 8.Slack. More in tune with large companies or startups that have passed the 100 person marker, this book explains the pitfalls awaiting those that are driven to succeed in today’s world. It explains how slack — in schedules, life, etc. — are necessary.

Moving my Blog

My Lispian.org is going to be phased out. In its stead will come this blog. It’s still a work in progress but I’ll get it organized over the coming months. All the stuff on the old blog will be migrated over, but not quite in the way it was stored in the old blog. Some of the works, like my stuff on my life as an entrepreneur, will be put together as a story entry linked off the main site. It’ll be easier to find and thus easier to read. Other stuff may well be misfiled until I get a chance to organize it better. Which reminds me of a pet peeve with the Internet: the ability to clutter up your universe with information. Creating “content” is easy, managing it is hard. Why are there so few companies focused on managing content and so many focused on creating more, regardless of value.

Musings

A blog of my musings. Some folks find it interesting and so I continue. Hopefully it will remain fairly interesting. At worst, it'll keep me writing orthogonally to my day job.
