Praying Instead of Doing

August 7, 2011

I’ve no problem with prayer. I have no problem with those of faith — so long as they leave those who don’t believe as they do alone. What I do have a problem with is when people fall back on prayer as the means to an end instead of getting off their sorry asses and doing something about the predicament they’re in. With the financial/economic fiasco in the US I had hoped to hear concrete solutions to solving their problems, along the lines of what Chretien and Martin did in the mid-90s here in Canada. Namely, raise taxes and cut spending while also shoring up various social programs that are necessary. That pain we went through in the 90s has done us well. Sadly, we should have sucked up the pain a bit more and dropped the entire set of surpluses onto the debt. From 199x to 2009 we were in surplus. Had we dumped those surpluses onto the debt we’d be so much better off. I just wish people would realize that paying off the debt is equivalent to a huge future tax cut. The sooner we get rid of the debt the sooner we get all that money

Creationists drive me nuts

November 1, 2010

As I sit here in excruciating pain courtesy of yet another kidney stone I can’t help but think how genetics and evolution provided me with this “joyful” condition. Which makes me think of idiotic creationists who think God went about the planet a few thousand years ago going “Horse. Pig. Donkey. …” Insanity. Why creationists believe in such an animist god is beyond me. A god who is stupider than I am is irreconcilable with either my faith or intelligence. And that’s one of those things I simply cannot figure out. Why do so many people believe in a god who is dumber than many people are? Is it the comfort that comes from believing someone created everything as it is as opposed to someone who was intelligent enough to create the fundamental algorithms of the universe that would result in the beauty we see everywhere, from the smallest of the small to the immensity of the universe itself. Is it so hard to comprehend that it is much more wonderful to believe that God created a universe based on mathematics, that behaves in comprehensible ways that we, as humans, could comprehend given time? Is it not more wonderful to

Anti-Religious Tourette’s

Probably the best description of what most irritates me about Dawkins is his constant harping on his dislike of religion. Randy Olson in his review of Dawkins’ latest endeavour points out how bad it has become, asking “But in the end, you have to wonder why Dawkins wastes so much time trying to argue with creationists. We all know that creationists are not rational thinkers. They are driven by beliefs, not by logic.” There is some kind of deep rooted hatred or anger that drives Dawkins. He seems incapble of accepting that someone can believe in evolution and God. He also ends up being massively condescending, which turns way too many people off. And his either-or stance re: God and evolution is simply absurd. Not everyone is as smart as Dawkins, but making them feel stupid isn’t the answer to getting them to see your point of view. In fact, taking an absurdist either-or stance drives those on the fence towards the absolutist religious fundamentalists, losing entire generations in the process! It’s the worst thing that can be done. Especially in a democracy where those now deluded, irrational creationists will demand their “theory” supplant science and scientific theories in the

God Help Us

I tire of these creationist fools, in all their guises. Without diligence they’ll shove us back thousands of years with their insane takes on science. Even after Judge Jones’ stated that those pushing creationism displays “breathtaking inanity”. That phrase can be applied to a lot of idiocy out there, today. For the curious wishing to be educated — and probably affronted — watch BullShit! by Penn and Teller. The multifronted assaults on Reason must stop. I worry about our future when wishful thinking is even contemplated as being “science”. Why is stupidity and ignorance constantly elevated above intelligence and knowledge? It baffles me. Breathtaking inanity, indeed.

St. Augustine

One of my favourite ancient writers is St. Augustine. I’ve been slowly reading through City of God. It’s a hard read, especially as the language is not something I’m used to reading. But the man’s intellect simply shines through. And since I always wanted to finish the book I’ll push myself to finish. For those unwilling or unable to finish City of God I’ll leave you with my favourite Augustinian quote: Christians should not hold dumb opinions about the natural world based solely on misreadings of the Bible, especially opinions that can be demonstrably falsified by reason, lest the Faith be subject to ridicule and mockery. If more Christians would just follow that edict we wouldn’t have the problems with science education we see worldwide at the moment.

Musings

A blog of my musings. Some folks find it interesting and so I continue. Hopefully it will remain fairly interesting. At worst, it'll keep me writing orthogonally to my day job.
