Proof of God’s Existence

September 14, 2011

Atheists always ask for proof of God’s existence. Some wonder if God has a sense of humour. I figure humanity should be enough proof for the latter. But what of the former? Well, I give you “The Gore Effect”. It seems that every time that Al Gore speaks in a public forum about Global Warming excessively frigid weather arrives. He is to speak in the US midwest tomorrow (I believe). The temperature forecast is 20F. Obviously, unseasonably cold. It may even snow — it’s snowing in Colorado, in fact. The curious can enjoy a weather report here. So, there you go. Proof there is a God. Proof he has a sense of humour. What more can atheists ask for?

Anti-Religious Tourette’s

Probably the best description of what most irritates me about Dawkins is his constant harping on his dislike of religion. Randy Olson in his review of Dawkins’ latest endeavour points out how bad it has become, asking “But in the end, you have to wonder why Dawkins wastes so much time trying to argue with creationists. We all know that creationists are not rational thinkers. They are driven by beliefs, not by logic.” There is some kind of deep rooted hatred or anger that drives Dawkins. He seems incapble of accepting that someone can believe in evolution and God. He also ends up being massively condescending, which turns way too many people off. And his either-or stance re: God and evolution is simply absurd. Not everyone is as smart as Dawkins, but making them feel stupid isn’t the answer to getting them to see your point of view. In fact, taking an absurdist either-or stance drives those on the fence towards the absolutist religious fundamentalists, losing entire generations in the process! It’s the worst thing that can be done. Especially in a democracy where those now deluded, irrational creationists will demand their “theory” supplant science and scientific theories in the

St. Augustine

One of my favourite ancient writers is St. Augustine. I’ve been slowly reading through City of God. It’s a hard read, especially as the language is not something I’m used to reading. But the man’s intellect simply shines through. And since I always wanted to finish the book I’ll push myself to finish. For those unwilling or unable to finish City of God I’ll leave you with my favourite Augustinian quote: Christians should not hold dumb opinions about the natural world based solely on misreadings of the Bible, especially opinions that can be demonstrably falsified by reason, lest the Faith be subject to ridicule and mockery. If more Christians would just follow that edict we wouldn’t have the problems with science education we see worldwide at the moment.

Musings

A blog of my musings. Some folks find it interesting and so I continue. Hopefully it will remain fairly interesting. At worst, it'll keep me writing orthogonally to my day job.
